If you have little ones or just can’t make it to the campground every weekend, then camping in your backyard could be a great try out the idea of camping with your children and see what you really will need when you go camping at a destination.
Just because you are camping in your backyard doesn’t mean it can’t feel like “real” camping. Prepare for the night out like you would a camping destination trip, considering everything you might need for the time you plan to spend camping.
Set up the camping gear – tent, sleeping bags, campfire, etc. – in your backyard and plan out meals. Enjoy S’mores and plan activities that don’t include cell phones, TV or computers! It could be something like taking a walk around the neighborhood or at a nearby park, catching fireflies, or just telling stories around the campfire. Enjoy each others company and being outside.
